Eating cake is not necessarily an appropriate thing to promote during lent, but we did have a cake sale last Sunday. It’s undoubtedly a good fundraiser, but for me has been a huge source of blessing, and that’s not through eating them. To see people’s generosity shine through baking has been wonderful. Spending time setting up the table, arranging, slicing and admiring cake has provided the best opportunity to meet people as they bring cake to The Bear. And I have met the best of people through doing it, got to see their talent and build relationship. l can definitely recommend those Bear people you need to cadge an afternoon tea invite from. For some people, the cake sale has provided a chance to shine, to put their ‘lamp on a stand’. For others, baking makes us vulnerable; what if it doesn’t rise? tastes awful? looks likes the dogs dinner? falls apart when you slice it? But we still give. So thanks for the opportunity, organising cake sales has given me the privilege of seeing your, ‘light shine before men’ as you have created, baked, decorated and given and caused me to ‘praise my Father in heaven’. 11 lent days to go, warm the oven, get baking, invite people over and feed them cake.
