The Ragged Project
Our Vision: To build a home in the heart of Deptford where people can grow, feel safe, be creative and take responsibility for both local and global communities. We seek to love God and love each other as we work out our mission to alleviate poverty, isolation, inequality, hardship, distress, homelessness, and sickness.
Our history: The Deptford Ragged Trust’s roots trace back to 1844, when The Deptford Ragged School was founded, 27 years before the state provided education for all children. Established by eight Christian men and women in a loft above a Deptford cowshed, the school aimed to teach children to read and write, often also providing food.
Our present: The 33 flats at socially affordable rent now have tenants and are able to call The Bear House home. While we’ve already raised £204,206 towards this phase of the project, we’re currently facing a funding gap of £399,694. Of that, £178,000 is urgently needed for essential works including a full electrical fit-out, installation of internal doors, and emergency signage.
