IN OUR COMMUNITY
A message from The Bear’s Environmental Group
A small group of us recently gathered to discuss the results of an environmental audit on the new Bear building. This rapidly developed into a discussion about wider issues relating to the responsibility we have as Christians towards our planet. We are aware that these are issues that many people have been thinking about for a long time, but we would like to develop a shared understanding in the Bear Church about what our responsibilities are - both individually and together.
The early chapters of Genesis are rich with references to humanity’s relationship to God’s new creation. For example, in Genesis 2:15 God places Adam in the garden of Eden “to till it and keep it.” There are further teachings in the Old Testament about how God’s people were to care for animals and the earth and warnings from the prophets about not caring for the environment - all of which lead to the beautiful vision in Revelation 21-22 of a new heaven and the new earth.
Looking at this as a group left us with a number of questions. Is this still relevant today? What does this mean for us individually and corporately? How does this affect how we operate in the Bear building? Can we communicate this to the local community of Deptford?
If you’d like to help us ask questions and discuss possible answers, we’d love you to get involved.
