IN OUR COMMUNITY
Our verse of the year from The Church of the Ascension was Isaiah 62:10. Below Rev. Anne offers some reflections on this prophetic gift :
Go through, go through the gates,
prepare the way for the people;
build up, build up the highway,
clear it of stones,
lift up an ensign over the peoples.
Isaiah 62:10
The Bear Church has done so much building up over the years to create your new building that as soon as I read this verse, I knew I wanted to share it with you. You have created a space for people to live and to worship in the heart of Deptford, carrying on the vision of the Ragged School founders in a modern way. Almost all English churches were built with towers or spires as waymarkers for people as they travelled from place to place and as a reminder to look upwards and seek the joy of heaven. Your beautiful mosaic cross, lifted high over the streets, is a reinterpretation of that idea, Isaiah's ensign to the peoples, a sign that here is a place for you to focus on God.
It's been a long time coming, but I know your project is finally nearing completion and we at the Ascension pray that you will soon go through the gates and open your wonderful new church. When you do, I hope you will keep in touch with the Church of the Ascension, and us with you, and that we can be prayer partners for years to come.
Every blessing.
