IN OUR COMMUNITY

BEAR HOUSE

In August we celebrated a year since residents started moving into Bear House - 33 studio flats built as part of the Bear Church development for young adults at risk of being made homeless.

Here are three exciting projects that we and J49, our housing provider, have seen happen this year:

  • Mentoring scheme: volunteers from the Bear have been trained to be mentors to residents who have signed up for 6 sessions, exploring ways of overcoming barriers and moving on in their lives.

  • Women's Group: a resident and a J49 employee have joined forces to facilitate this group - they meet monthly to walk, talk and do crafts.

  • Çay on the Terrace: while the sun shines, we have had two lovely evenings on the 2nd floor garden serving mint tea and Turkish coffee for anyone who wants to socialise and have a caffeine boost.

We ask that you keep praying for the residents and the work of J49 and the Bear Church as we seek to build this creative community in the heart of Deptford.

Hiking Mount Snowdon : Mel, Mike, Amy, Donna and friends will be climbing Mount Snowdown on Saturday 27th September to raise money for the building project. Get in touch with Mel if you would like join, and to support or share their campaign, here is their Just Giving page.

Hugh's half marathons : Hugh will be running THREE half marathons to raise money for the building project. If you would like to donate, you can do so here

Job listing : Power the Fight is a small but dynamic Christian charity based in South East London dedicated to supporting young people affected by violence, and their families. We are seeking a Finance Officer to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong financial management skills and a passion for our cause to help us efficiently manage our finances and make a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.

Hosting request : Hi, I'm Becky. I've just finished my A levels and am looking to move into London for a change of scenery and to try professional wrestling as a hobby. I'm looking for a place to stay for a couple of months or so - just a bedroom and a shared kitchen and bathroom would be all that I need. Woolwich or Greenwich would be a good location but anywhere nearby would also be fine for me. If you think you could help, speak with Sarah on Sunday.

Artists Reframing the Prophetic : a weekend residential led by Christine Westhoff (24-7 Prayer) and Abbie Troyanek, to explore how the Holy Spirit works through creativity to reveal God's prophetic voice. The weekend runs from the 3rd to the 5th of October and is facilitated by (friend of The Bear) Martin Young and you can read more about it here

Donations for a family in Gaza : Larry is asking if anyone is able to give to help relocate a family based in Northern Gaza to the south. The violence has intensified to the point that they have decided to evacuate their home. Amjad, his daughter and his parents have all been injured or have medical conditions so travel is difficult on foot and so they need to make assisted travel arrangements. If you can donate, please do so here.
